On the Coast

Whether it's some serious R&R or an adrenalin pumping experience you're after, Kenya's coastal town of Mombasa really does have something for everyone. Stretch out on the tropical sands and soak up the sun or splash about in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. For thrill seekers not keen on sitting still, the coast's water sports provide the ideal alternative activity.

If coming face to face with a whale shark sounds like your perfect afternoon, the protected reefs around Mombasa's coast are the place to be. During diving season you'll encounter colourful fish, sea turtles, dolphins and the friendly whale shark.

In the Forest

Back on dry land the coastal rainforests which border the beaches provide shelter for baboons, Colobus monkeys and leopards. Used to co-habiting you may not need to wait long until a monkey makes itself known to you, they're not shy. The Shimba National Reserve is just a few minutes' drive from Mombasa, the perfect location for a day trip. Featuring Kenya's only population of Sable Antelope and over 700 elephants roving in the park, visitors can experience Kenya's famous wildlife with beautiful views of the Indian Ocean.

Down Town

During its prolific history many have vied for possession of Mombasa's old town. It's been tussled over by everyone from the Portuguese settlers to British colonialists and retains influences from every power who has taken up residence there.
